Early Life and Education

Born in a village amidst 300 families with limited educational opportunities, Murty Vepuri was raised by parents deeply rooted in farming and religious music. One of ten siblings, Murty showed exceptional curiosity and ambition from a young age. Despite the lack of resources and the societal barriers of caste and poverty, Murty pursued education diligently. He studied in government schools alongside his father’s religious programs.

His academic prowess led him to Loyola College in Vijayawada for pre-university studies and subsequently to Andhra University, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy. Continuing his academic journey, Murty obtained a Master’s degree in Biochemical Engineering and Pharmaceutical Technology, further solidifying his foundation in the pharmaceutical field.

Career

Murty Vepuri’s professional journey commenced with his first job at Hoechst in Mumbai, where he gained valuable experience through a rotational internship in manufacturing and laboratory roles. Following his Master’s degree, he assumed a position at Bharat Salt and Chemicals in Orissa, India, eventually venturing to the United States to pursue better opportunities.

Mr. Vepuri immigrated to America in 1977 with meager resources, bringing only resilience and determination. Starting from humble positions, including cleaning tablet machines, he swiftly ascended the ranks in pharmaceutical companies such as PurePack (now Teva) and Barr Labs. In 1978, he joined ICN Pharmaceuticals, laying the groundwork for a successful career as a production manager.

In 1984, Murty Vepuri ventured into entrepreneurship by establishing Able Labs, demonstrating his entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to pharmaceutical innovation at the dawn of the generics era. Despite initial challenges, including leveraging personal assets and navigating the industry’s complexities, he achieved significant milestones, including approving the generic Tranxene tablet and Monistat suppositories.

Since 2003, Murty has served as an advisor to KVK Tech, a dynamic pharmaceutical company that is a leader in developing and manufacturing high-quality, FDA-approved medicines. Murty is proud of the valuable work that KVK does to bring high-quality, affordable pharmaceuticals to those who need them, and he proudly shares his knowledge with KVK to support the company’s mission.

Philanthropic Initiatives

Parallel to his professional endeavors, Murty demonstrated a profound commitment to philanthropy. Inspired by a desire to give back to his community, he established the Satyaram Health Clinic, a charitable organization in India dedicated to providing low-cost access to healthcare for rural villages. Vepuri also contributed substantially to constructing a Hindu temple in Bridgewater, New Jersey. In 1989, Murty Vepuri donated to the University of Kentucky Department of Pharmacy to hire post-doctoral academics to achieve the University’s research goals.

In addition to his professional achievements, Murty and his late wife, Dr. Varalaxmi Vepuri, MD, have championed numerous philanthropic initiatives to support education and childcare. Their programs, ranging from funding university education for employees’ children to assisting with early childcare, reflect their deep-seated belief in the transformative power of education and family support.
